The School of Education at the University of Michigan seeks colleagues for a tenure-track appointment (open rank) in the graduate programs in Higher Education in the Center for the Study of Higher and Postsecondary Education. We seek applications from policy scholars with a strong focus on diversity, equity, justice, and inclusion situated in one or more of the following research areas:  access, choice, and/or enrollment in postsecondary education; postsecondary outcomes; state or federal policy. Scholars utilizing critical perspectives and mixed methods in their research and teaching are particularly welcome.

Regardless of area, we seek applications from scholars who can build on their expertise to play a major role in the creation and use of scholarship in higher education, who have strong methodological training in quantitative methods, who can teach courses in areas of need, and who seek to influence institutional, national, and international policies and practices that will improve higher education.  Such a colleague will contribute to achieving the Center’s potential and vision, and will uphold high standards for research, teaching, and service to the profession.  Toward this end, we seek an individual with a passion for contributing to the betterment of society through education, and with innovative ideas about how graduate education and research can help postsecondary education meet contemporary challenges.  

We plan to fill the position with a start date of September 2022 or January 2023. Salary will be negotiated based on the candidate’s experience and qualifications.  The appointment will be for the regular nine-month academic year with possible additional remuneration for administrative duties. Salaries at the University of Michigan compare favorably with those at other leading institutions of higher education. Who We Are


For more than six decades, CSHPE has been one of the premier preparation programs for higher education scholars, practitioners, and leaders. It is distinguished by its breadth of opportunities within this interdisciplinary field of study, by meaningful research of national significance, and by generations of graduates who provide exceptional leadership through scholarship and practice. As a comprehensive higher education program, students and faculty alike are attracted by the wide range of topics reflected in its curriculum and in Center-sponsored research projects and professional activities. The work of the Center is enhanced by the rich and diverse set of resources available at the University of Michigan. The Center seeks to build on these resources by continuing and strengthening its linkages to other disciplines and university units. These include the Ford School of Public Policy, the National Center for Institutional Diversity, the International Institute, and the Center for the Education of Women.

The Center offers Ph.D. and M.A. degrees in higher and postsecondary education. Its curriculum has two broad objectives: 1) to increase students’ understanding of higher education as an area of academic inquiry, scholarship, and practice; and 2) to prepare students for administrative, policy, and scholarly careers in higher education. Master’s students also have the option of the dual degree MA/MPP program in Public Policy and Higher Education, and a dual degree MA/MBA program between the Ross School of Business and Higher Education. Doctoral students construct their academic programs from four concentration areas: Public Policy; Academic Affairs and Student Development; Research, Evaluation and Assessment; and Organizational Behavior and Management.


Candidates will be expected to pursue an active research agenda, teach graduate courses, advise graduate students, direct doctoral dissertations, and serve as an active member of the School of Education, the University, and higher education professional communities.  Experience mentoring students of diverse backgrounds, including women, students of color, and first-generation college students, is desired.  For tenured positions, joint appointments may be possible within the School of Education or with other schools and colleges.

Required Qualifications*

Candidates should have a track record of outstanding scholarship in a discipline or professional field that contributes to the scholarly study of policy in postsecondary education.  The appointment may be at the rank of assistant professor (tenure track); or associate or full professor (with tenure). Candidates for associate or full professor should be nationally recognized scholars with a strong record of empirical policy studies and grants in higher education. Candidates at the assistant professor level should have outstanding potential and a defined policy research agenda related to higher education. At all levels, demonstrated teaching ability, strong methodological skills, and desire to develop sponsored research are required.  Prior administrative or public policy experience in higher education is also highly desirable.

Successful candidates will have:

·       A doctorate in higher education, education, or a related social science field 

·       A strong record of research in one or more of the desired specialization areas

·       Experience teaching at the master’s and/or doctoral levels

·       An established program of research and publication in policy research

·       A track record of developing and securing grants to support research, or the promise of developing such a track record

·       A strong interest in advising and mentoring graduate students
