The Educational Leadership Program invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor of educational leadership with a research and teaching expertise in one or more of the following areas of specialization beginning Fall 2022: Education Finance/Economics, Human Resource Management, School Improvement Science or Education Law

The successful candidate will join a learning community populated by faculty dedicated to research, teaching and service. The College and Department are motivated by the ongoing commitment of increasing the national visibility and quality of its programs. The ideal candidate holds a doctorate degree and possesses the knowledge, methodological skills and professional experiences needed to pursue a robust, focused research agenda that informs program teaching assignments. This individual will be active and visible at the national level, publishing research in top journals in the field, presenting annually at national/international academic conferences, and supporting both through grant acquisition aligned with these interests. In addition, the candidate will provide evidence of a solid academic foundation for engaging in the aforementioned activities associated with a tenure-track position at a R1 (Carnegie classification) and/or AAU institution. 

The Educational Leadership (EL) program offers multiple graduate degrees. The intent of Ph.D. degree is to prepare researchers, faculty, educational leaders and policy makers in the K-12 education sector. A newly revised, cohort-based Ed.D. program is designed to develop and hone decision skills of aspiring educational leaders who are committed to building the instructional capacity of the schools and districts in which they serve. Coupled with these are the MA and EdS degrees that lead to leadership certification in the state of Alabama. Nested within a Department that houses higher education, instructional technology and policy programs, the Educational Leadership faculty are made up of a healthy mix of tenure-track and clinical faculty. Aspiring applicants will join a team of scholar-teachers who have established publication records, served in various leadership positions, and who are committed to professorial roles of research, teaching and service. Producing informed, just, and highly competent professionals is a goal shared by all EL faculty. The EL program and College of Education at the University of Alabama is an early and long-standing full member of the University Council for Educational Administration. 


• Pursue a rigorous and innovative line of research

• Serve on dissertation committees; Advise graduate students 

• Chair/co-chair dissertations toward end of tenure -probation period 

• Provide service to department, college, university, and profession 

• Teach and potentially develop courses in the program’s masters and doctoral programs 

• for face-to-face, hybrid and online formats 

Minimum Qualifications 

• Earned doctorate (by date of hire) in one or more of following specialties: education finance/economics, human resource management, school improvement science or education law 

• Curricular and research expertise in: Ed Finance/Economics, Human Resource Management, School Improvement Science or Ed Law 

• Sound quantitative and/or qualitative methodological skills 

• Evidence of ability to define/pursue a coherent research agenda 

• Evidence of ability to publish in top academic journals in the field 

• Ability to teach courses in Education Finance/Economics, Human Resource Management, School Improvement Science or Education Law 

• Ability to teach general ed leadership courses as needs arise 

• Ability to pursue and procure grants aligned with research agenda 

• Ability to mentor graduate students and serve on dissertation committees 

• Commitment to building the reputation of the department locally, state-wide and nationally through one’s research, teaching and service.
